Who we are

Japan Trip Companion (JTC) is a travel-planning and recommendation app operated under the Japan Japan Ichiban brand. For privacy questions, contact japanjapanichiban@gmail.com.

Information we use

• Account information: your email address, account identifier and sign-in provider.
• Trip information: destinations, dates where supplied, arrival details, accommodation area, traveller group and preferences.
• Your choices: interests, saved places, booking status, checklist progress and selected Sensei.
• Support information: anything you choose to include when contacting us.
• Essential technical information: security, authentication and error records produced by our service providers.

You can explore much of the app without signing in. Guest information remains on your device unless you later sign in and choose to synchronise it.

How we use it

We use this information to provide personalised Japan recommendations, synchronise your saved trip across devices, send requested sign-in codes, protect accounts, provide support and improve reliability.

We do not sell personal information. We do not use your trip details for third-party advertising.

Our legal bases

Where UK data-protection law applies, we process account and trip information to provide the service you request, for our legitimate interests in securing and improving JTC, to meet legal obligations, or with your consent where consent is required.

Services that help us operate JTC

We use carefully selected providers, including Supabase for authentication and cloud data, Expo/EAS for app delivery, and Resend for account emails. Google and Apple may process sign-in information if you choose their sign-in options.

JTC also links to independent services such as Klook and Sakura Mobile. Their own privacy policies apply after you open their websites or apps. Some links are affiliate links and may generate a commission without increasing your price.

Where information is processed

Our production database is hosted in London. Some service providers may process limited information in other countries. Where required, appropriate contractual and legal safeguards are used for international transfers.

Retention and deletion

Cloud account and trip information is retained while your account remains active. You can permanently delete your account and synced cloud data from the app at any time. Limited security records or backups may remain temporarily where required for security, recovery or legal compliance.

Deleting your cloud account does not automatically erase guest information stored only on your device. You can remove that information by clearing the app’s data or uninstalling the app.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may ask to access, correct, delete, restrict or receive a copy of your personal information, or object to certain uses. You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office or your local data-protection authority.

Children

JTC is designed for travellers and is not directed to children under 13. A parent or guardian should contact us if they believe a child has provided personal information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as JTC develops. Material changes will be highlighted in the app or on this page, and the date above will be updated.
